Is Your Driving License Valid in UAE?
Driving in Dubai is a wonderful experience due to its modern highway systems and well-structured city layout. However, before renting a car, tourists must understand the legal driving license requirements of the United Arab Emirates.
Do You Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
If you hold a tourist visa, you can legally drive a rental car in the UAE if you have a valid driving license from specific exempted countries. If your home country is not on the exemption list, you must present an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original national license.
Exempted Countries List
Visitors from the following countries can drive in Dubai on their national licenses directly:
- GCC Countries: Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain.
- Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark.
- North America: USA, Canada.
- Asia/Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea.
Important Notes for Visitors
Always keep your passport, tourist visa page, and home country driving license in the vehicle. If you transition to a resident visa, you must immediately obtain a UAE driving license; driving on your foreign license becomes illegal once residency is issued.
