HOW LONG IS A SECURITY DEPOSIT HELD FOR CAR RENTALS?
Find out the exact timelines for credit card pre-authorization releases, cash returns, and why Dubai rental companies hold deposits.
The 21–30 Days Rule Explained
By default, almost all licensed car rental agencies in Dubai and the UAE hold the security deposit for 21 to 30 days from the date you return the vehicle.
While this timeline may seem long compared to European or American countries, it is dictated by the local traffic fine registration system.
Why Do Agencies Hold Your Deposit?
There are two primary reasons why the deposit cannot be released immediately when you return the car:
- Traffic Fine Processing Window: In the UAE, speed camera radars, parking violations, and tailgating offenses are processed by municipal police databases. It can take up to 15 days for a fine to register on the central Dubai Police or RTA system.
- Salik & Toll Gates: Toll gates (Salik in Dubai, Darb in Abu Dhabi) detect RFID tags on windshields. The billing processing between the RTA and the rental company\'s fleet account can experience delay offsets of up to 10 days.
Deposit Refund Methods & Timelines
| Method | Release Time | Process |
|---|---|---|
| Credit Card Pre-Auth | 21 Days | Block automatically drops off your statement. No bank transaction occurs. |
| Debit Card Charge | 21–30 Days | Refunded via bank transfer back to your card. Can take 3–5 working days to settle. |
| Cash Deposit | 30 Days | Refunded via IBAN international bank wire transfer (bank fee applies). |
Best Practice Recommendation
Always use a **Credit Card** instead of cash or debit cards. The pre-authorization holds only block a portion of your credit limit but do not pull actual money from your checking account. This avoids exchange rate conversion fees and international transfer charges when receiving refunds.
