WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR RENTING A CAR IN DUBAI?

Dubai is one of the easiest places in the world to rent a car, provided you have the right documentation. Car rental agencies are strictly monitored by police and transport authorities, meaning every contract requires digital logging of credentials. Keep these checklists handy before booking.
For Tourists & Visitors
If you are visiting the UAE on a temporary holiday, tourist visa, or transit card, you must provide:
- Passport: Photo page must be clearly legible and valid for at least 6 months.
- UAE Tourist Visa: Stamped page or copy of your e-visa.
- National Driving License: Issued by your home country.
- International Permit (IDP): Compulsory if your home country is not on the exempt list.
For UAE Residents
If you reside in the UAE on an employment, investor, family sponsor, or golden residency visa, you must provide:
- Emirates ID Card: Original physical card must be presented for chip reading.
- UAE Driving License: A valid physical license issued by the RTA.
- Passport & Visa Copy: Stamped visa page or residency card printout.
Financial Requirements: Deposit Cards
In addition to identity documents, you will need to provide a payment card for the security deposit block.
- Credit Card (Highly Recommended): Most rental companies require a credit card in the main driver\'s name. The deposit is held as a pre-authorization block.
- Debit Cards / Cash: Some agencies accept debit cards or cash deposits for standard economy vehicles, though it may take longer to refund.
- Name Matching: The name on the credit card must match the name on the driver\'s license and passport exactly. Third-party credit cards are generally rejected for security reasons.
